Log Homes should NOT be Drafty Homes

Myth: Log Homes have air leaks
Fact: Proper Chinking & Caulking Eliminates Drafts

Take a moment to read the attached article from PermaChink regarding air exchange and proper sealing of your Home. Mountain Log Homes of Colorado, Inc. is an Energy Star for New Homes Builder and hires an Independent Energy Auditor to check EVERY home we build. We are very honored to have been recognized for the second time with the High Country Conservation Center and Summit County Builder's Association with the Energy Excellence Award among ALL of the homes entered in the Summit County Parade of Homes. Our standard building practices are to Chink or Selectively Caulk all common areas known for possible air filtration. These areas are commonly found where traditional framing meets the log structure. We routinely revisit our client homes to settle the home and review the caulking and sealing after the first year.

Mountain Log Homes builds two common log styles…Swedish Cope Style with a spline or insulation system between each log which does not require chinking between each log, or a Hand Crafted Chink Style home that can have as little as 1” and as much as 4” of chinking between each layer of log to fill the void between logs. We routinely do two blower door tests on each home, one prior to final caulking to find any trouble spots, and again before final Certificate of Occupancy to assure we sealed all the locations that air exchange was occurring. We are proud to routinely have some of the best blower door scores of any builder in our community. We meet or exceed all 2009 IECC requirements.
